Sophie Cruz became the youngest immigrants rights activist in 2015. She was only 5 at the time. When you were five could you do that? (I bet not.)
Do you live with your family? Sophie did, but she wasn't happy she was scared. Her parents were immigrants. From Oaxaco, Mexico. They were escaping violence and poverty. Sophie was scared because her parents aren’t U.S citizens, so they could be deported at any time. They would have to leave Sophie and her younger sister behind.
Do you know why Sophie Cruz is famous?
Sophie is the youngest immigrants rights activist. She became in the spotlight” in 2015 when the pope visited Washington D.C. She ran up to the pope and gave him a letter saying: “ My heart is sad. I would like to ask you to speak to the president and congress in legalizing my parents. Everyday I'm scared they will take them away from me”.
Have you heard about protests or the Women's March?
Well Sophie Cruz was there, there she gave a speech, it said: Let us fight with love, faith and joy so our families will not be destroyed”. She said this infront of many people. She not only said that in English but in Spanish two.
Do you have a motive?
Well Sophie Cruz sure does. Her motive is her parents. At the age of five wrote a letter saying she didn't want her parents being taken away from her. Why does she keep going to protests? She goes to protests to help people who don't have a voice in their community.
Sophie Cruz is now age 10 (as of 2020.) She lives with her parents and sister. She has gone to many protests from the age of 5-10 and at the age of 5 wrote a letter and When the pope was visiting Washington D.C. gave him a letter at the age of 5. Sophie is still the youngest immigration rights activist. She can speak Spanish as well as English. Her parents are now U.S. citizens and can vote.
